How To: Despicable Me 2 Minion Pumpkins

How To: Paint Despicable Me 2 Minion Pumpkins

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

It's that time of year again!  Time to break out the pumpkins and start to decorate the house for Halloween!  This year my family decided to create minion pumpkins from the movie Despicable Me 2.  They came out super cute and better than expected!  Keep reading for instructions on how to make these adorable minion pumpkins.

Here are the materials you will need:
  • Pumpkins (real or fake- it's up to you!)
  • Paint (yellow, purple, black, blue, white, red and brown)
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Metal mason jar lids
  • Black duct tape
  • Purple Garland (we recycled some from old Easter baskets)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Black Permanent Marker
Step 1- Draw out your minion design onto each pumpkin

We took a permanent marker to sketch out the faces we wanted on each pumpkin.  You can see that we made some mistakes on them, but they were easily covered up with paint.  To avoid these mistakes, feel free to use a pencil first then trace the pencil with the marker.  Another tip is to trace around the metal lids to get perfect circles for the eyes.

Step 2: Paint your mason jar lids silver

We bought metal mason jar lids to use for the minions' goggles.  Unfortunately, we could only find gold lids, so we had to paint them silver.  First, we applied a white base coat.  Next, we applied the silver paint.  Then, we let them dry while finished the rest of the pumpkins.

Step 3: Apply your base coat of purple and yellow

The first thing we painted was all of the purple or yellow depending on the minion you were working on.  We needed about two coats for the purple minions and three coats for the yellow minions.

Step 4: Begin to paint the eyes and mouths

First, we added white paint to the eyes and teeth.  It's always best to start off with the white because if you mess up it's easier to paint another color on top of the white paint than it is to paint the white paint on top of another color without needing several coats.

Next, we added purple to the irises of the purple minion eyes and brown to the irises of the yellow minion eyes.  Then, we used black for the pupils.  We added a final touch of a white dot on the iris to make their eyes shine.

We used red paint for the minion with his tongue sticking out.  Then, we used a mixture of red and brown to paint the remainder of the mouth.

Step 5: Paint the overalls

We used a blue paint for the yellow minions' overalls and black paint for the purple minions' overalls.  Once they completely dried we added white dashes around the edges for the stitching   We also added the buttons and logo in black and purple paint.

Then, we used the black permanent marker to trace around the details of the face- such as the teeth, mouth and eyes.

Step 6: Wrap the black tape around the head for the goggle straps

We found black duct tape and used it for the straps of the goggles.  Due to the round shape of the pumpkins we had to cut the tape into five inch sections so it would not bubble.

Step 7 & 8: Hot glue pipe cleaners and purple garland for the hair.  Then glue the metal lids for the goggles

We folded black pipe cleaners into small pieces and glued them down with our hot glue gun.  PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF!!! It helps if one person holds the pipe cleaner for about a minute to allow the glue to dry as the other person glues down the next piece.

We used leftover Easter basket garland for the hair of the purple minions.  This was harder to glue down so we just put a ton of glue all over the top and carefully pushed the garland into the glue.

Then we put hot glue around the edges of the metal lids and placed them onto the eyes for the goggles.

The final result:

These minion pumpkins were super easy and fun to make!  We are going to put them on our porch for Halloween!  If you don't want to make them on such a large scale, you can see in our final photo that we painted the minions on a baby pumpkin too!
